Overview

ChessUnlock is a macOS desktop application. We respect your privacy and designed the app so that no personal data ever leaves your Mac.

Data stored on your Mac

All of your personal app data is stored locally on your Mac and is never transmitted anywhere:

• Your puzzle rating (Elo score)
• Solve history and streak data
• App preferences (cooldown, night mode, difficulty)
• License key (if purchased)

Anonymous product analytics (PostHog)

ChessUnlock uses PostHog to capture a small number of anonymous product events (for example: app launched, puzzle solved, settings changed) so we can understand how the app is used and improve it. This is configured to be as minimal as possible:

• No personal profiles are created (PostHog "person profiles" are disabled).
• No name, email, or account is ever sent — there are no accounts.
• Your IP address is stripped on the server side and never stored.
• Automatic screen-view and lifecycle tracking is turned off.
• Events carry only a random, locally generated install ID and basic app/device info (app version, OS version, trial state). They never include puzzle content, your rating, your history, or any other personal data from your Mac.

In short: no personal data ever leaves your Mac. We only see aggregate, anonymous product usage.

What we do not collect

• No personal information (name, email, location)
• No accounts, contacts, or address book access
• No puzzle content, rating, or solve history is sent off-device
• No cross-site cookies or advertising trackers

License validation

License keys are validated locally on your device. No network request is made to verify your license.

Puzzle data

Chess puzzles are sourced from the Lichess open puzzle database and bundled with the app. No internet connection is required to use ChessUnlock.

Third parties

We do not share any data with third parties. If you purchase a license through Stripe, Stripe's own privacy policy applies to that transaction.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page.
